Col. Herbert E. Clark Memorial Scholarship
The Col. Herbert E. Clark Memorial Scholarship is designated as a general academic award. This endowed award was established in 2009 by Col. Clark's family following his passing in September of that year. Col. Clark taught Labor Economics and related courses at Shepherd College until 1991, retiring as an Associated Professor Emeritus. Col. Clark served as an early paratrooper in the European Theater during WWII with the 17th and 82nd Airborne Division. Following the war, he returned to the University of Maryland (where he had begun undergraduate studies before the war) and graduated with a B.S. degree in Industrial Relations. He also received his Regular Army Commission at that time. He was a graduate of the Regular Infantry Officers Course, and the Command and General Staff College. He also received a Master’s Degree in Industrial Relations from West Virginia University and continued graduate work at American University. Col. Clark served in Korea with the 1st Raider Company. He completed duty in Panama and Japan as the executive officer of the 501st Airborne Infantry, as well as duty on the General and Joint Staff. He served as a provincial advisor in Vietnam. His last assignment was with the ROTC program at West Virginia University. Col. Clark retired from active duty in 1969 after 24 years of service to his country. His military decorations include the Bronze Star with two oak leaf clusters for valor, the Meritorious Service Medal, the Purple Heart, the Korean Warang, Distinguished Service Cross, the Vietnamese Cross of Gallantry, the U.S. and Korean President’s Unit Citations, and the one of which he was most proud, three awards of the Combat Infantry Badge.
Community Oil Company Scholarship
The Community Oil Company Scholarship is designated as a general academic award. This endowment was created in 1992 by Community Oil, now Griffith Energy Sources.
Cox Family Trust Scholarship
The Cox Family Trust Scholarship was created in 2019 by Julie Harden as the representative of the Cox Family Trust. The scholarship is to benefit students from Clarke County, VA who are studying nursing at Shepherd University. The first award was given out in spring 2020.
D. Allen Fowler Memorial Scholarship
The D. Allen Fowler Memorial Scholarship is designated as a general academic award for Eastern WV students who are members of the National Guard. This endowment was established by Mr. and Mrs. Donald Fowler in memory of their son, who passed away in 1985. D. Allen Fowler, II was a student at Shepherd University and a proud member of the WV Army National Guard.
D. Scott and Linda Hottel Roach Athletic Scholarship
by D. Scott and Linda Hottel Roach Athletic Scholarship is designated as a general academic award for students participating in athletic programs at Shepherd University. This deferred endowment was established in 2019 by alumni Scott '80 and Linda '81 Roach, who are both avid supporters of Shepherd athletics.
Dale and Rozelle Leatherman Memorial Scholarship
The Dale and Rozelle Leatherman Memorial Scholarship is designated in support of students pursuing majors within Shepherd University's College of Business. This annually funded award was created in 2018 by Lynn E. Leatherman '92 in memory of his parents, with support from Lynn’s sister, Dale Ann Leatherman, and his children Lyndsey W. Matschat, ’06 and Lynn E. “Chip” Leatherman, II. Dale A. Leatherman and Rozelle L. Leatherman were the founders of Falling Waters Campsite in Falling Waters, WV. Established in 1962, the business is still operated by the Leatherman family. Dale and Rozelle were wed during WWII and remained married for 67 years until Rozelle’s passing in 2009. Dale later passed away in 2013. The couple continued working for as long as they were physically able – Rozelle until she was 80 years old and Dale until he was 90. According to Lynn, Dale and Rozelle built their business from nothing and worked very hard to establish opportunities for their family for many years to come. Most importantly, however, they did so with the objective of helping their customers and other members of the community, making a point of treating everyone fairly, with compassion and respect.
Darrell Reeder Memorial Scholarship
The Darrell Reeder Memorial Scholarship is designated for students majoring in biology. This endowment was created for Darrell Reeder, a biology student at Shepherd who died tragically in an automobile accident in the late 1960's. His parents and fellow biology students established the fund in his memory.
Dave Lewis Memorial Shepherd Football Offensive Line Scholarship
The Dave Lewis Memorial Shepherd Football Offensive Line Scholarship is designated in support of a non-transfer member of the Shepherd University Football Team in the position of offensive lineman. This annually funded award was established in January 2016 by the Lewis family of Shepherdstown to honor its patriarch, David L. Lewis '74. Dave was a big fan of the game of football and firmly believed it teaches young men discipline and hard work, and that the teamwork involved is unlike any other game. He played for the Shepherd University Rams in the position of offensive lineman. Recipients of the Dave Lewis Memorial Shepherd Football Offensive Line Scholarship are selected by Coach Monte Cater and must also be in good academic and social standing at Shepherd University.
David "Ed" Fincham Scholarship for Physical Education and Athletics
The David "Ed" Fincham Scholarship for Physical Education and Athletics is designated for students pursuing studies in the areas of physical education, teaching, recreation and sports, health promotion and exercise sciences, and coaching at Shepherd University. This endowment was created in 2020 by Sophia Arvon Fincham and her sons, Chris Fincham '95 and Andrew Fincham '00, in memory of their husband and father. David Fincham served Shepherd athletics as an assistant football coach, as well as head coach for the university's golf and women's basketball programs. He is the all-time winningest coach for the latter with 153 wins, and coached several Hall of Fame inductees over his 12-year tenure. He also served as director of intramurals at Shepherd for 12 years and was instrumental in training numerous students who later became successful athletic officials.
David and Betsy Newlin Scholarship
The David and Betsy Newlin Scholarship is designated as a general academic award. This endowed fund was created by David ‘76 and Betsy ’78 Newlin in 2004 to give back to Shepherd University and to encourage and support students whose parents have no background or experience in higher education. David was employed by Shepherd for 12 years.
