Charles Victor Perry Memorial Scholarship

The Charles Victor Perry Memorial Scholarship is designated for nursing students with financial need, with preference given to residents of West Virginia. This annually funded award was created by Dr. Doris Burkey ’88 and her husband, Michael, in memory of Doris’ son, who passed away in 1976 at 11 ½ months old from viral meningitis. His passing inspired Dr. Burkey to pursue a career in nursing, despite being a young single mother at the time. Dr. Burkey earned her associate’s degree in nursing from Shepherd College in 1988, followed by her masters of science in nursing (with nurse family practitioner), her B.S.N., and finally her doctorate of nursing (D.N.P). In 2015, she returned to her alma mater to serve as an assistant professor of nursing in Shepherd’s Doctorate of Nursing Practice (D.N.P.) program, the first doctorate-level program offered by the University. Dr. Burkey also coordinates the family nurse practitioner tract of the program.
