Ralph and Margaret Burkhart Memorial Scholarship
The Ralph and Margaret Burkhart Memorial Scholarship is designated for science, business education, or arts and humanities students. This endowment is one of several scholarship awards funded by the Burkharts, who were devoted to philanthropy, giving not only to Shepherd University, but also to City Hospital, Hospice, and numerous other charities.
Ralph Burkhart Legacy Scholarship
The Ralph Burkhart Legacy Scholarship is designated for general academic support. This endowment is one of several scholarship awards funded by Ralph and Margaret Burkhart, who were devoted to philanthropy, giving not only to Shepherd University, but also to City Hospital, Hospice, and numerous other charities. Recipients of the Ralph Burkhart Legacy award are selected by the Honors Program.
Ramon A. and Mary E. Alvarez Faculty Excellence Endowment Fund for the College of Business
The Ramon A. and Mary E. Alvarez Faculty Excellence Endowment Fund for the College of Business is designated for the recruitment, recognition, and retention of outstanding faculty in business. This endowment was established by Ramon ‘62 and Mary Alvarez, in 2006 as the Ramon A. and Mary E. Alvarez Faculty Excellence Endowment Fund for Business Administration, and updated in 2018 to reflect the newly created College of Business at Shepherd University. After completing his degree in Business Administration in 1962, Ray went on to become a senior executive with Honeywell, Inc. retiring in 1998 as vice president, group executive for Honeywell’s Sensing and Control businesses. He then became active with his alma mater, serving the Shepherd University Foundation as president, and as the current president of the Scarborough Society. By establishing this award, Ray proved to be a leader and pioneer in a new initiative to endow faculty positions and secure funds to assure faculty excellence at Shepherd University.
Randall Wadsworth Music Scholarship
The Randall Wadsworth Music Scholarship was created in 2016 by Randy Wadsworth.
Ray and Madeline Johnston Endowed Chair in American History
The Ray and Madeline Johnston Endowed Chair in American History is designated for the recruitment, recognition, and retention of outstanding faculty in American History who share the Thomas Jefferson belief system of virtue and talent. It was created in 2006 by Ray S. and Madeline V. Johnston as the first endowed chair position for Shepherd University.
Ray E. Harris Scholarship
The Ray E. Harris scholarship is designated for students studying science. This endowment began as a fundraising effort by Professor Harris's former students to honor his retirement in 1972. The funds were then transferred over to the Shepherd Univeristy Foundation for management and administration.
Raymond and Ceil Frazier Music Scholarship
The Raymond and Ceil Frazier Music Scholarship is designated for students pursuing studies in the area of music or music education. This endowed fund was established in 2014 by Charles Town Presbyterian Church, where Ceil led the music program for more than 50 years, while Raymond sang in the choir. A Shepherd graduate and former music teacher and band director, Raymond passed away in November 2014. In recognition of Ceil's subsequent retirement, church friends and family honored the couple by making gifts to endow a music scholarship in their names.
Raymond Baby-Knott Scholarship
The Raymond O. Baby-Knott scholarship is designated as a general academic award for students who reside in Jefferson County, WV or Washington County, MD.
Rev. Paul and Jean Thompson Scholarship
The Rev. Paul and Jean Thompson Scholarship is designated as a general academic award for pre-ministerial students. This endowment was created in 2001 by Reverend and Mrs. Thompson to help students with financial need engaged in pre-ministerial studies.
Richard "Rick" Wachtel Memorial Scholarship
The Richard "Rick" Wachtel Memorial Scholarship is designated in support of incoming freshmen from Martinsburg High School who demonstrate a commitment to community service and leadership (as determined by and based upon criteria set by the appropriate Martinsburg High School scholarship committee in consultation with family representatives). This annually funded award was established in 2018 by Sandra Wachtel in honor of her late husband, who passed away in July 2017. Rick Wachtel ’68 graduated from Shepherd with a degree in business and went on to become actively involved in the community as both a small business owner and public official. In 1976, he co-founded TalkRadio WRNR-AM 740, for which he served as president and general manager for the next 40 years. In December 2015, Rick sold the station in order to focus on new endeavors, including volunteering his time and talent to give back to Shepherd as an athletic advocate. In this new role, he served as a liaison between Shepherd and the local community, promoting opportunities for businesses and industry to support the university. A former Shepherd football player, Rick could be found in the Smallwood and Small Insurance Pavilion during every home game, cheering on the Rams while working to boost support for the university. He hoped to serve as a role model to other alumni and encourage them to follow is lead in giving back to their alma mater.
