This endowment was established by Robert Rissler '47, a member of the Shepherd University Foundation board of directors, in memory of his wife Jean Rissler '49. Originally established in Jean’s name only, Robert later changed the name of the award to reflect the couple’s mutual desire to leave their estate to Shepherd through a bequest in his will. The Risslers, who had no children, also requested the Shepherd University Foundation to serve as executor of the estate, which included Jean’s historic family home in Shenandoah Junction, West Virginia. Roger P. Parker Memorial Scholarship
The Roger P. Parker Memorial Scholarship is designated in support of student athletes in the men’s and women’s tennis programs at Shepherd. This endowed scholarship was established by the Parker family in memory of their husband and father. Roger Parker coached several sports during his 31-year career at Shepherd University, including football, cross country, and track and field. But it is his establishment of the men’s and women’s tennis programs for which he is most well-known. Widely considered to be the “Father of Shepherd Tennis,” Roger’s success as a coach is legendary. His teams won five WVIAC Team Championships and four NAIA District Championships, while his players earned three WVIAC Player of the Year awards, two Academic All-America recognitions, and over 50 WVIAC individual championships. As a result of his coaching techniques, strategies and team performances, Roger was named Coach of the Year five times by the WVIAC, and was inducted into Shepherd University’s Hall of Fame in 2002. “Dad was a heck of a competitor in tennis,” says Roger’s son, Chris Parker ’82, noting that his father received his pro certification from Van Der Meer Tennis Academy in Hilton Head, SC, and continued to compete at a high level throughout his life. “It almost seemed meant to be for him to create the tennis program at Shepherd." Chris notes that the Parker family wanted to help students through the creation of a scholarship, designating it in support of the tennis program in order to connect it to Coach Parker and his legacy at Shepherd.

As a former correctional nurse at the Martinsburg Correctional Center, she oversaw the care of 150 inmates. In January 2019, complications from Pulmonary Sarcoidosis, an autoimmune lung disease, forced her to resign from her most recent job as a floor nurse in Berkeley Medical Center’s behavioral health unit.
