Roxanne R. French Nursing Scholarship
The Roxanne R. French Nursing Scholarship is designated for students pursuing a degree in nursing. This deferred endowment was established in 2019 by Shepherd alumna Roxanne French '94 for whom nursing is a calling. Her 25-year career has included work in long-term care, dialysis, hospital work, and home health. As a former correctional nurse at the Martinsburg Correctional Center, she oversaw the care of 150 inmates. In January 2019, complications from Pulmonary Sarcoidosis, an autoimmune lung disease, forced her to resign from her most recent job as a floor nurse in Berkeley Medical Center’s behavioral health unit. While she enjoys all areas of nursing, she considers psychiatric nursing to be her niche.

Rural Health Policy Internships
The Rural Health Policy Internships include compensation for two merit-based internship opportunities per year for Shepherd students who are interested in rural health and health policy. The internships may take place at either of two organizations: the Federal Office of Rural Health Policy (FORHP), which allows students to learn about federal and state programs that exist to support rural communities, or the National Rural Health Association (NRHA), the principal membership organization in the nation for rural health policy. These annually funded awards were created by Dr. Marcia K. Brand, who spent six years directing the FORHP. Upon leaving the government in 2015, Dr. Brand also served as deputy administrator of the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA), an agency within the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. In this career civil servant role, she served as second in command of a 1,800-person agency with an $11 billion budget. Rural health policy is a passion for Dr. Brand, who made a ten-year commitment to fund these internship opportunities as a way to facilitate a better understanding of the industry among Shepherd students wishing to pursue careers in health policy.
