Michael and Dianne Rissler Alvarez Scholarship for Nursing

The Michael and Dianne Rissler Alvarez Scholarship for Nursing was established in memory of Michael “Mike” Alvarez and in honor of his wife of 51 years, Dianne Rissler Alvarez. Mike and Dianne were born and raised in Jefferson County, West Virginia. Mike attended Shepherd College before joining the United States Navy. He retired from the National Parks Service in 2019. Additionally, he volunteered with the Jefferson County Ambulance Authority for 17 years. Mike and Dianne were very thankful for the healthcare field, and both of their sons, Ryan and Chad, pursued careers in healthcare. Ryan studied nursing at Shepherd and Chad studied pharmacy at West Virginia University and Shenandoah University.

The Michael and Teresa Stout Scholarship is designated as a general academic award for second-semester juniors or seniors, with preference given to graduates of Martinsburg High School. This annually funded award was created by Michael and Teresa Stout in appreciation of the financial assistance Mike received as a student at Shepherd.

Michael M. Athey, Ed.D. Endowed Scholarship

The Michael M. Athey, Ed.D. Endowed Scholarship is designated in support of science education students and student athletes, with preference given to those participating in men's and women's basketball and volleyball. This endowment was established by Dr. Athey, a native of the Eastern Panhandle, who served as a teacher and administrator with the Berkeley County Public school system before becoming a professor at WVU in teacher education courses and fire safety instruction. Deeply committed to his involvement in the Shepherd community, Athey's gift reflects his varied interests.

The Mike Doran Soccer Scholarship is designated for members of the men's soccer team. This annually funded award was established by former members of the soccer team in honor of former head coach Mike Doran, who led the team to a WVIAC championship in 1996. This fund is a testament to the man whose philosphy is "one should always leave a place a little better than they found it".

Miller-Waters Family Scholarship

The Miller-Waters Family Scholarship is designated for students pursuing studies in the area of education. This endowment was created in 2021 by Shepherd alumni Emily Waters '57 and Althea Miller '57. Eight members of the Miller-Waters family graduated from Shepherd, including Althea's late husband Frank Miller '55, nearly all of whom majored in education.

Moler General Scholarship

The Moler General Scholarship is an endowed fund created by the Shepherd University Foundation for the purpose of funding need-based general academic scholarships. The fund was named in honor of one of the founders and longtime president of the Shepherd Foundation, Dr. James M. Moler. Donors who wish to build for the future of Shepherd University by making endowed gifts for scholarships may choose to give to this fund in any amount.

Monte Cater Silver Anniversary Endowed Football Scholarship

The Monte Cater Silver Anniversary Endowed Football Scholarship is designated for football student athletes. It was created in 2011 by Al `67 and Sara `67 Lueck, both long time supporters of the football program, to honor Coach Cater's 25 years as head football coach. During his tenure, Coach Cater has built a program considered to be among the best in Division II football.
