McMillan Family Scholarship for Theater
The McMillan Family Scholarship for Theater is designated for students majoring in theater. This award was originally established as the Jefferson Distributing Company Scholarship. The McMillans later endowed the funds in 2004.
McMurran Scholars Association Scholarship
The McMurran Scholars Association Scholarship is designated for McMurran Scholars pursuing a graduate degree at Shepherd. This endowed award was established in 2011 as part of the 50th anniversary celebration of Shepherd University’s prestigious McMurran Scholar Award. It was created in honor of the first recipients of the award: Sandra Osbourn ’62, Garland Ott ’62, and Nicholas Pappas ’63.
Melinda Merk Law Scholarship
The Melinda Merk Law Scholarship was established in 2022 by Melinda Merk, JD. A member of the Shepherd University Class of 1991, Merk created this scholarship with the intention of supporting future generations of students in the study of law.
Mentzer Award for Inspirational Teaching (MAIT)
The Mentzer Award for Inspirational Teaching (MAIT) at Shepherd University was created in 2016 by Susan Mentzer-Blair ’72 and her husband, William Blair. This annually funded award honors a full-time professor recognized by Shepherd University students for being particularly inspiring and having a profound effect on his or her students. Sue's brother, Dr. John Thomas “Tom” Mentzer, served as inspiration for the award. Tom received a similar accolade from his PhD candidate students at the University of Tennessee in Knoxville, where he held the Bruce Chair of Excellence in the business department. The MAIT honors Sue’s brother, who passed away in 2010, as well as her mother, who followed in 2014. A portion of each of their estates was used to create the unique recognition. All Shepherd students are invited to nominate in writing a professor for consideration for the award; the four-week nomination period takes place early in the spring semester each year. The MAIT is awarded annually in the amount of $1,000 during the Student Recognition Day ceremony each spring. Awardees may not receive this honor in subsequent years.
Merle J. and Josephine Saville Shultz Scholarship
The Merle J. and Josephine Daville Shultz Scholarship is designated for students studying elementary education or science. This endowment was established in 2008 by the children of Merle '28 and Josephine ‘32 Shultz, in memory of their parents, who met while students at Shepherd. Following their parents’ footsteps, Jeffrey Shultz ’63, Philip Shultz ’68, and Merelyn Shultz Kaye ’59 are also all Shepherd grads.
Michael and Dianne Rissler Alvarez Scholarship for Nursing
The Michael and Dianne Rissler Alvarez Scholarship for Nursing was established in memory of Michael “Mike” Alvarez and in honor of his wife of 51 years, Dianne Rissler Alvarez. Mike and Dianne were born and raised in Jefferson County, West Virginia. Mike attended Shepherd College before joining the United States Navy. He retired from the National Parks Service in 2019. Additionally, he volunteered with the Jefferson County Ambulance Authority for 17 years. Mike and Dianne were very thankful for the healthcare field, and both of their sons, Ryan and Chad, pursued careers in healthcare. Ryan studied nursing at Shepherd and Chad studied pharmacy at West Virginia University and Shenandoah University.
Michael and Teresa Stout Scholarship
The Michael and Teresa Stout Scholarship is designated as a general academic award for second-semester juniors or seniors, with preference given to graduates of Martinsburg High School. This annually funded award was created by Michael and Teresa Stout in appreciation of the financial assistance Mike received as a student at Shepherd.
Michael M. Athey, Ed.D. Endowed Scholarship
The Michael M. Athey, Ed.D. Endowed Scholarship is designated in support of science education students and student athletes, with preference given to those participating in men's and women's basketball and volleyball. This endowment was established by Dr. Athey, a native of the Eastern Panhandle, who served as a teacher and administrator with the Berkeley County Public school system before becoming a professor at WVU in teacher education courses and fire safety instruction. Deeply committed to his involvement in the Shepherd community, Athey's gift reflects his varied interests.
Michael P. and Barbara Riccards Minority Student Scholarship
The Michael P. and Barbara Riccards Minority Student Scholarship is designated as a general academic award. This endowment was established by Dr. Riccards, who was president of Shepherd University from 1989-1995.
Michael W. Hudson Scholarship
The Michael W. Hudson Scholarship is designated as a general academic award. This deferred endowment was established by Michael Hudson '72, who graduated from Shepherd with a B.A. in History and a minor in mathematics.
