Marian and Upton Martin Scholarship
The Marian and Upton Martin Scholarship is designated as a general academic award for WV students. This endowment was established by Upton '25 and Marian '26 Martin, both of whom had strong connections to Shepherdstown, with family ties dating back generations. The fund was established as a way to honor the value of investing in future generations of Shepherd students.
Mark and Barbara Stern Scholarship
The Mark and Barbara Stern Scholarship is designated as a general academic award for students involved in the Honors Program. This annually funded award was created by Shepherd's former Vice President for Academic Affairs, Mark Stern, and his wife, Barbara, a former professor at James Madison University. The Sterns, who both retired in the summer of 2013 and relocated to Scottsdale, AZ, are lifelong proponents of the benefits of higher education.
Mark H. Curley Endowment
The Mark H. Curley Endowment is designated for honors or political science students participating in the Canadian Parliament Internship Program at Shepherd University. This deferred fund was established in 2014 by Dr. Mark Curley, a native Canadian and friend of Shepherd University. The Canadian Parliament Internship Program, created by Curley in 2007, allows for one student each summer to travel to Ottawa, ON, to participate in the workings of a parliamentary form of government. Students are selected by Shepherd's political science faculty.
Mark S. Grove Memorial Scholarship
The Mark S. Grove Memorial Scholarship is designated for accounting majors, sophomore status or above, who maintain a 3.0+ GPA. This endowment was established in 1990 by the Board of Directors of Shenandoah Federal Savings Bank in Mr. Grove's honor. His wife Frances designated the scholarship to provide support for students enjoying the study of accounting as much as her late husband.
Martha Josephs Memorial Scholarship
The Martha Josephs Memorial Scholarship is designated as a general academic award. This endowment was established in memory of Martha Josephs, a teacher at Shepherdstown Elementary School, by her husband, Dr. Michael B. Josephs. Dr. Josephs was a longtime chairman of the Shepherd College Division of Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Safety.
Martha L. Smith Memorial Scholarship
The Martha L. Smith Memorial Scholarship is designated for West Virginia students majoring in an agriculture-related field or environmental science. This endowment was created in 2005 by Nancy Alfriend and the Shenandoah Garden Club in memoriam of Martha Smith, who served as the president of the National Garden Club from 1989-1991. Martha's legacy is the Friendship Garden at the National Arboretum in Washington, D.C., which was designed and funded during her tenure as president.
Martinsburg Civitan Club Scholarship
The Martinsburg Civitan Club Scholarship is designated for students majoring in special education or nursing. This endowment was established in 2006 by the Martinsburg Civitan Club to aid students who are preparing for a career working with individuals with physical or developmental disabilities.
Mary C. Enright Scholarship
The Mary C. Enright Scholarship is designated for history students. This endowment was established by Mary Duke Enright, a 1936 graduate of Shepherd University who became a history teacher in the Montgomery County, MD school system. She was also a founding member of the Joseph P. McMurran Society, comprised of a special group of donors who have generously chosen to share their lifelong financial achievements with Shepherd University in the form of an estate or other planned gift.
Mary C. Hunter Scholarship
The Mary C. Hunter Scholarship is designated as a general academic award for WV residents. This endowment was established by Ms. Hunter, who was a 1938 graduate of Shepherd College.
Mary E. Roberts Scholarship
The Mary E. Roberts Scholarship is designated for incoming freshman at Shepherd University who graduated from River View High School in McDowell County, WV. This annually funded award was established in 2014 by Elizabeth Roberts and Brian M. Peterson in memory of Elizabeth's paternal grandmother, a hard-working widow and single mother to five children who taught Beth the value of higher education. Beth, who is a counselor with Berkeley County Public Schools, became inspired to help the citizens of her hometown after learning about the Reconnecting McDowell project, which aims to bring a brighter economic future to McDowell County through educational improvements. She and Brian, an attorney for Bowles Rice, LLP, chose to establish a scholarship through the Shepherd University Foundation to promote the value of a Shepherd education.
