John W. Headlee Memorial Scholarship
The John W. Headlee Memorial Scholarship is designated as a general academic award.
John Y. McDonald Memorial Scholarship
The John Y. McDonald Memorial Scholarship is designated as a general academic award for WV residents. This endowment was established in honor of John Y. McDonald by his son, Angus. John was a well-known citizen of Jefferson County, WV, world traveler, and strong advocate of higher education.
Jonathan Paul Daily Endowed Scholarship
The Jonathan P. Daily Endowed Scholarship is designated for applied mathematics students. This endowed fund was established by Dr. Larry Daily after his son's passing in 2011. Jonathan utilized his applied mathematics degree from George Mason University in his job at the Leetown Science Center, where he modeled insect populations in local streams. He had been published in the Journal of Ecology in addition to successfully questioning a methodology in his field at professional conferences. Larry felt Jonathan was well on his way to creating his own legacy in the field of applied mathematics at the time of his death, and created this award to perpetuate that legacy.
Joseph and William Byers Memorial Scholarship
The Joseph and William Byers Memorial Scholarship is designated for education or business majors. It was established in memory of two members of the Byers family. Several members of the family were graduates of Shepherd College.
Joseph C. and C. Marie Burkhart Memorial Business Scholarship
Shepherd graduate Beverly Burkhart Yeagle ’69 and her husband Merv Yeagle established the new Joseph C. and C. Marie Burkhart Memorial Business Scholarship in honor of Beverly’s parents. The endowed award will support students pursuing studies in the area of business.
Joseph J. Renn III, M.D. and Robin L. Renn Endowed Scholarship
The Joseph J. Renn III, M.D. and Robin L. Renn Endowed Scholarship is designated for students pursuing a degree in the biological and medical sciences. This deferred endowment was created in 2018 by Joseph J. Renn, III, M.D. '60 and his wife, Robin L. Renn. Dr. Renn graduated from Shepherd College with a B.S. in Biology and believes his undergraduate education provided him with a solid foundation for fulfilling his lifelong dream of attending medical school and pursuing a career in medicine. “I think Shepherd gave me my true direction in life and I wanted to give something back,” he said. Though Robin did not attend Shepherd, she shares her husband’s commitment to the university. Joe and Robin met while working at Monongalia General Hospital in Morgantown, WV, where Robin worked as an x-ray technologist for 30 years. The couple is now enjoying retirement in South Carolina.
Josephine Elizabeth McMurran Kellogg Scholarship
The Josephine Elizabeth McMurran Kellogg Memorial Scholarship Fund is designated as a general academic award for non-traditional students. This endowment was established in 2004 by Mr. Kemper Lorraine to honor the memory of his mother.
Judy Rand and Friends Scholarship for Aspiring String Musicians
The Judy Rand and Friends Scholarship for Aspiring String Musicians is designated to provide stipend money to defray the cost of private lessons for aspiring youth musicians involved with the Shepherd Community Orchestra to study with adjunct faculty leaders within the community music division of the university's Department of Music. This annually funded award was established in 2018 by Shepherdstown resident Judy Rand, an adult amateur string musician (violin and viola) who has played with the orchestra since 2009. The Shepherd Community Orchestra provides opportunities for over 70 local string and wind students to play in a community and youth orchestra of outstanding caliber. The group is comprised of a Junior String Ensemble for beginner and inexperienced students, as well as an Advanced Orchestra for advanced students and adult community members. Youth members include elementary, middle, and high school string students from Jefferson and Berkeley Counties in West Virginia, and Washington County, MD.
Karen Wempe Breast Cancer Memorial Scholarship
The Karen Wempe Breast Cancer Memorial Scholarship is designated for students pursuing careers in the sciences. This endowment was created in 2004 by Mr. and Mrs. Olin Joyce, the parents of Karen Wempe, as well as her husband, William Wempe. Karen Wempe worked as an assistant to the Vice President of Administration and Finance at Shepherd University. She passed away after a long and courageous battle with breast cancer.
Kathy Windle Ram Band Color Guard Scholarship
The Kathy Windle Ram Band Color Guard Scholarship was established by Wesley Windle in memory of his wife, Kathleen “Kathy” Windle. Kathy was a performer, educator, trainer, and award winning choreographer who loved and lived a life of storytelling through music and movement. She was owner of New Hopewell Center for the Arts and instructor of the Jefferson High School Band Color Guard and the Shepherd University Ram Band Color Guard. The endowed award will support Jefferson High School and Washington High School graduates who participated in their high school band color guard and who are enrolled in the Shepherd University Ram Band Color Guard.
