George M. Nethken Graduate Fellowship
The George M. Nethken Graduate Fellowship is designated for graduate assistants at the George Tyler Moore Center for the Study of the Civil War. This endowment was established by Mildred Nethken in memory of her husband, George, who passed away in 1998.
George Tyler Moore Center for the Study of the Civil War
The George Tyler Moore Center for the Study of the Civil War Endowment is designated as program support for Shepherd University's Center for the Study of the Civil War, which serves as administrator of the National Park Service's Civil War Soldiers System (CWSS). This database consists of several fields of basic data taken from index cards and used to manually update and maintain soldiers' service records at the National Archives. The center operates out of the Conrad Shindler House, a gift donated by actress Mary Tyler Moore in 1995. Erected in 1795, the house was owned by Ms. Moore's great, great, great grandfather during the first half of the nineteenth century and, like many buildings in Shepherdstown, received wounded Confederate soldiers during the Battle of Antietam in 1862. Originally named simply the Center for the Study of the Civil War, the organization was renamed in 1996 in honor of Ms. Moore's father.
George W. Dersam and Blanche Dersam Everhart Memorial Scholarship
The George W. Dersam and Frances Dersam Everhart Memorial Scholarship is designated for elementary education majors. This endowment was created in 1996 by Frances Dersam as a memorial to her husband.
George Wilson Endowment for Communications
The George A. Wilson Communications Scholarship Endowment is designated for students majoring in communications. This deferred endowment was created in 2009 by Shepherdstown resident George Wilson.
George Wilson Endowment for Music
The George A. Wilson Music Scholarship Endowment is designated for students majoring in music. This endowment was created in 2009 by Shepherdstown resident George Wilson.
Gerald and Bonnie Dodson Scholarship
The Gerald and Bonnie Dodson Scholarship is designated for students majoring in education. This deferred endowment was created in 2018 by Gerald '77 and Bonnie Dodson. As a public educator, Mr. Dodson was a hands-on instructor who strived to make sure his students truly understood what he was teaching them. If they struggled, he tried incorporating different modalities and teaching methods to help them, something he credits his education professors at Shepherd College with teaching him. A double major in Physical Education and Mathematics, Mr. Dodson spent 26 years as a math teacher and six years as an administrator in Clarke County and Frederick County Public Schools in Virginia, and also coached several sports. He and his wife, Bonnie, reside in Berryville, where they have owned an antiques business for nearly 40 years.
Gerald F. Smith Memorial Scholarship
The Gerald F. Smith Memorial Scholarship is designated for students from Winchester or Frederick County, VA, who are majoring in business, science, or engineering. This endowment was created in 2004 by Mike Smith ‘89 in memory of his father, who owned and operated Valley Proteins, Inc., in Winchester, Virginia. Founded by Mike’s grandfather over 60 years ago, the "green" company contributes to a cleaner environment and develops clean energy bio fuel.
Glen Lapp Excellence in Nursing Endowment
The Glen Lapp Excellence in Nursing Endowment is designated for WV residents in their final year of Shepherd University's nursing program. This endowment was established by Dr. and Mrs. Lapp in memory of their son, Glen, and his and Shepherd education. Glenn passed away a few days before his graduation in 1997.
Golan M. Saufley and Virginia Rudasill Saufley Memorial Scholarship
The Golan M. Saufley and Virginia Rudisil Saufley Memorial Schoarship is designated for students in the nursing program. This endowed fund was established through the Golan M. Saufley and Virginia Rudasill Saufley Trust.
GOPAC Education Fund Scholarship
The GOPAC Education Fund Scholarship is designated for political science majors at Shepherd University who are pursuing a concentration in political communications. This annually funded award was created in 2020 by the GOPAC Education Fund, a non-profit organization affiliated with GOPAC, based in Washington, D.C. The scholarship will support two students each year for a minimum of four years. Recipients are selected by a scholarship committee established through the Bill and Bonnie Stubblefield Institute for Civil and Political Communications.
