2017-18 Impact Report

Director of Strategic Research Initiatives
Dr. Jason Best, professor of astronomy and astrophysics, has been named director of strategic research initiatives. In his new role, Dr. Best will work collaboratively with external and internal partners to further develop and enhance the university’s emerging research agenda across all disciplines. Dr. Best will draw upon his experience as an American Council on Education (ACE) Fellow in fall 2015 when he was in residence at Misericordia University in Pennsylvania. Mentored by Misericordia President Thomas J. “Tom” Botzman, Dr. Best focused on how a primarily undergraduate institution can enhance its culture of research for all students at all levels.

JoVE

The President’s Club partnered with departments across campus to provide unlimited access for Shepherd students and professors in science and nursing to use JoVE Science Education – a revolutionary video library dedicated to teaching scientific fundamentals through video demonstrations.  These videos demonstrate experimental, laboratory, and clinical hands-on techniques in several areas:

  • Biology (basic, cellular and molecular, biochemical, genetic, neurobiological, microbiological)
  • Chemistry (general, organic, analytical)
  • Nursing (clinical skills, assessment, nursing skills)
  • Environmental Science (earth science, environmental microbiology)
  • Physics (appropriate to Physics I and II)
  • Psychology (cognitive, experimental, developmental, neural, social, sensory systems, study design)

Faculty are using JoVE Science Education in class for demonstrations and as homework for lab preparation.  It enables the students to understand the experiment and process before stepping into the lab for the work.

National Millennial Community Trip

The President’s Club supported the Shepherd Chapter of the National Millennial Community (NMC).  The NMC is a national network that provides networking and educational opportunities for students interested in PR, advertising and media. The organization hosts bi-monthly calls with executives at companies like Coca-Cola, Comcast, Kickstarter, GM, ABC/Disney, and many more.  During March 2018, two student and one faculty advisory will travel to Philadelphia and Washington D.C. to meet with executives at major brands and in government.  The cost of the trip is shared with the IW Group, an advertising firm in Los Angeles and New York City.

A full report on the National Millennial Community Trip to Philadelphia and Washington, D.C. is also available.
