Scholar Spotlight with Matthew VanDuzer

This week our Scholar Spotlight shines on freshman Matthew VanDuzer, a health promotion and exercise science major from Martinsburg, WV, and recipient of the Frada Fine Scholarship. Ms. Fine was a graduate of Martinsburg High School and a lifelong resident of the city of Martinsburg. She served as president of Consumers Fuel Company and was the owner of the Circle F Farm, where she raised Morgan horses.

The Frada Fine Scholarship was endowed through an estate gift to Shepherd University upon Ms. Fine’s passing in 2003. Designated for graduates of Martinsburg High School, it is a general academic award that includes full tuition and fees – a gift that has made all the difference for Matthew.

“My parents did not have the opportunity to attend college, and they faced challenges in their personal and professional lives as a result,” he explained. “The Frada Fine Scholarship has given me the great privilege of being a first generation college student, while alleviating the financial liability that comes with attending college.”
