BrickStreet Foundation Donates $500K to Fund Student Scholarships
Up to 10 Shepherd University students will benefit from a transformational gift of $500,000 made by the BrickStreet Foundation to provide scholarship support in perpetuity. The Shepherd University Foundation accepted the endowed donation on behalf of Shepherd University.
Created after the privatization of West Virginia’s workers’ compensation program, BrickStreet Mutual Insurance Company assists West Virginia workers and employers by improving the medical and compensation benefits for workers who are injured on the job while reducing costs for employers. Greg Burton, CEO of BrickStreet Mutual Insurance, said, “Helping families of injured workers in West Virginia is something our board feels very strongly about, and we want to give back to the communities in which we live and work. This is a fundamental part of our core values at Brickstreet.”
BrickStreet’s donation will permanently endow the BrickStreet Scholars Program providing 10 general academic scholarships each year in perpetuity, with special preference given to students majoring in math, nursing, or education. Awards will be based on financial need and grades. BrickStreet will help facilitate the selection process through a scholarship committee comprised of BrickStreet employees and Shepherd University representatives.
A reception will be held in the spring on the Shepherd University campus in recognition of the company’s generosity.
“We are enormously grateful to Greg Burton and the BrickStreet Foundation,” said Shepherd University Interim President Sylvia Manning. “This generous gift goes to the heart of what Shepherd University is all about: putting first-rate education within the reach of deserving students. Students and families will benefit for generations to come, and Shepherd will be proud of them and of BrickStreet.”
